Today, Orthodox churches recapitulate four major events prior to Christ’s Crucifixion; the Last Supper, the Foot-Washing of the Apostles by Christ, the Agony of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane, and the Betrayal of Jesus. The icon below conveys all four events:

The service on Holy Thursday evening incorporates twelve Gospel readings covering these events. The service is deeply moving and dramatic.
